Crisis Intervention is known as an emergency first aid for mental health
(Ehly,1986).
It consists of short-term techniques assisting the individual to navigate through the traumatic situation and building resilience. It seeks to bring back the individual to their state before the crises. Whenever we hit a brick wall or something unexpected occurs to us it is easy to believe we will be stuck in that state.
However, we don’t often reflect on the positive change these crises may bring. Our view of the event and our response to the event is what constitutes the crises for that individual. It is important to know that two people may experience the same event but their view and response to the event is what will determine if it is a crises situation for the individual.
Therefore, a crises technique entails identifying, assessing, and intervening appropriately. Goals that may exist as we process the event that has led to dysregulated state involves:
- Mitigate impact of event.
- Facilitate normal recovery processes.
- Restore adaptive function.
If you are feeling overwhelmed and have just experienced an event that has overwhelmed your capacity to cope and causes feelings of anxiety, helplessness, fear, inadequacy, confusion, agitation, and disorganization feel free to give us a call.
