Child Behavioral Issues

Children cannot communicate to adults about how they are feeling and instead resort to acting out as
a survival mechanism for them to cope with their emotions. Many behavioral issues in children have
an underlying cause and learning to help the child cope is important.

We work with children and their families to learn how to strengthen positive child behaviors and
eliminate or reduce unwanted or problem behaviors.

Family Violence Services

Offering professional and specialised services to assist children, young people and adults
affected by family violence. Family violence, often referred to as domestic violence, is a pattern
of behaviour where one person tries to dominate and control the other. It can include a range of
behaviours, including: physical, verbal, social, sexual, financial, and emotional abuse. Family
violence is never about love but power and control. Family violence can also take the form of
intimate partner violence, violence committed by a boyfriend or girlfriend. Services include:

  •  Individual support and counselling for individuals affected by family violence
  • Group work programs for affected adults, children and young people.

Family Therapy

I work with families to assist in basic conflict management and increase positive communication.

Families are dynamic; but what we do know is that we all have roles to play. We all learn how to socialize and model via our family.

Family therapy or family  counseling  is a form of treatment that is designed to address specific issues affecting the health and functioning of a family. It can be used to help a family through a difficult period, a major transition, or mental or  behavioural/health problem  in family members (“Family Therapy”, 2014). Various techniques and exercises from various models and theory to assist you to a positive family functioning. Types of techniques  depend on the specific problems the client or clients present with.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy involves the use of toys, blocks, dolls, puppets, drawings, and games to help the child recognize, identify, and verbalize feelings. The psychotherapist observes how the child uses play materials and identifies themes or patterns to understand the child’s problems. Through a combination of talk and play the child has an opportunity to better understand and manage their conflicts, feelings, and behavior.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps a child understand and accept their inner emotions. ACT therapists help children and teens use their deeper understanding of their emotional struggles to commit to moving forward in a positive way.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can be used to treat older adolescents who have chronic suicidal feelings/thoughts, engage in intentionally self-harmful behaviors, or have Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT emphasizes taking responsibility for one’s problems and helps the person examine how they deal with conflict and intense negative emotions. This can involve a combination of group and individual sessions.

Adoption Specific Therapy

Transitions can be difficult. It is often harder on children who are adopted at an older age. These children are at high risk of having behavioral problems and experiencing emotional distress. These therapy sessions deliver evidence-based child coping strategies and positive parenting approaches that are tailored to account for the child’s past history, alongside resiliency-focused, trauma-competent, attachment-based treatment.

Complete treatment can range from 8-10 sessions.
