On December 9, 2024, at the Bliss Institute, the Love Foundation hosted an impactful panel discussion titled “Promoting Respect and Equity Together: Our Collective Roles in Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.” This critical event was part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, aligning with global efforts to combat domestic violence and promote equity.
The Love Foundation was established in 2014 and is a transformational partnership organization bringing together passionate people and trusted resources to solve our nation’s challenges through innovative, collaborative solutions.
The event commenced with a welcome from Deborah Erskine, Managing Director of the Love Foundation, and Rosanna Briceño, Special Envoy for Families and Children.
The program featured a keynote address by Rosanna Briceño. She highlighted the collective responsibility of individuals and institutions in fostering safer communities.
The event’s panel discussion was moderated by Gender Specialist Ann Marie Williams. The panel brought together a diverse group of professionals, including Azalia Larrieu, Clinical Social Worker, and founder of META Belize, who provided insights on the psychological impacts of domestic violence on victims and families. The panel also featured insights from Diana Shaw, Attorney at Law, Inspector Shani Avilez, representing the BPD Domestic Violence Unit, and Mindy Pratt, Program Director at Haven House Belize.
The discussions were dynamic and reflected the expertise and dedication of each of the panelists.
A key highlight of the event was the Q&A session, which allowed students from the multiple invited high schools from across the country to engage directly with the panelists.
The audience’s highly relevant questions emphasized the community’s eagerness to be part of the solution and the need to host such insightful panel discussions. The program concluded with closing remarks from Kamesh Chivukula, Political Officer from the U.S. Embassy in Belize. His words reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting initiatives that address gender-based violence and promote equity.
This panel discussion was not just an event; it was a call to action. The Love Foundation’s dedication to fostering understanding, inspiring action, and transforming lives was evident throughout the program. Panelists and attendees sent a strong message to end domestic violence.
It is important to create platforms like these to engage younger generations. As many young people today find themselves entering unhealthy relationships or falling prey to harmful gender stereotypes, it becomes crucial to provide them with the knowledge and tools to navigate these challenges. Addressing these issues early can help break cycles of violence and foster a culture of respect and equality. Empowering youth to challenge societal norms related to gender-based violence is a vital step in building a future where everyone can thrive in safe and healthy relationships.
