Have you ever felt that you just wanted to run away? Have you ever felt your heart racing non-stop and you have no idea why? Have you ever felt your body suddenly freeze and you can no longer feel anything?
These may be symptoms of something that may have occurred to you in the past, but they are not who you are.
The American Psychological Association (2021) defines trauma as “an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural disaster.”
Sometimes what our body is biologically meant to react to may just become our worst enemy, if we are not equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to deal with the overwhelming emotions attacking us. In our society, we have been programmed for too long to hide our emotions and to not feel. Simple words such as “be strong” may have been instilled in our minds, hindering us from experiencing these much needed emotions.
However, it is never too late to learn a bit about how our body functions and how we can regulate our emotions and live a healthy life. It may not be as easy as it sounds. It will take the will to want to see a change in yourself and the will to commit. However, it is possible. You do not need to suffer in silence.
Remember your emotional response to an abnormal or disruptive situation may be very different from others. Everyone may be affected differently. It is okay to seek help with a professional counsellor who is equipped with the necessary tools to help you to where you would like to be.
