Storytelling and expressive arts brought creativity, imagination, and self-expression to Port Loyola Library through the Roots & Rhythms program. META Belize led the initiative in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Belize Sunrise. Together, they created a welcoming space where young people could explore stories, reading, creativity, and artistic expression.
Storytelling and Expressive Arts at Port Loyola Library
Guided by Mrs. Azalia Larrieu, the program welcomed primary school students from the Port Loyola community. The sessions gave students opportunities to build confidence, practice literacy skills, and connect with their creativity.
Each session included storytelling, reading, and interactive activities. As a result, students could participate in different ways while discovering how stories can encourage imagination and communication.
Building Confidence Through Stories
Guest speakers also visited the library and read stories aloud to the students. Their participation encouraged imagination and opened the door to meaningful conversations. In addition, students had opportunities to take the lead by reading books and sharing stories with their peers.
These activities made students active participants rather than simply listeners. Through storytelling and expressive arts, they could practice communication while sharing their own ideas and perspectives.
Creativity, Community and Connection
Roots & Rhythms also focused on community and belonging. Students had space to express themselves, connect with others, and celebrate their individual voices in a supportive environment.
At the end of the program, participants received certificates of completion and small tokens of appreciation. These recognized their participation, dedication, and enthusiasm throughout the sessions.
