The Belize Mental Health Association Celebrates World Mental Health Day

Today, Thursday, October 1st is celebrated worldwide as World Mental Health Day (WMHD). Founded by the World Federation for Mental Health, this year’s official theme of WMHD is ‘It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace’.

To commemorate this global campaign, Mrs. Azalia Larrieu, founder of META Belize and Vice President of the Mental Health Association (MHA), along with Ms. Tina Gill, Administrator of the Welcome Resource Center (WRC), appeared on 7 News’ ‘Sun Up on 7’, and Love FM ‘The Morning Show’ to discuss mental health advocacy, suicide awareness, and the upcoming symposium event hosted by the MHA.

Several high schools in Belize City today participate in the WRC’s ‘Paint the Campus Green’ campaign where students wear green as the international symbol of mental health awareness. Proceeds from this campaign will go to the WRC.

Youth Symposium

On Wednesday, October 16th , the MHA, in partnership with UNICEF Belize and the Department of Youth Services, invited 120 young Belizeans to attend the Youth Symposium here in Belize City.

With representatives and attendees from seven secondary level schools, the symposium aims to discuss mental health and advocate for suicide awareness — giving youths a platform to share their thoughts and concerns related to wellness.

The event will be held at the Ramada Princess Hotel from 1 pm – 4:30 pm. Watch the livestream on the Welcome Resource Center’s Facebook page.
