World Mental Health Day in Belize brings attention to mental health awareness, advocacy, and the importance of emotional well-being. The global observance takes place each year on October 10. In 2024, the theme focused on prioritizing mental health in the workplace.
World Mental Health Day in Belize
To recognize the global campaign, Mrs. Azalia Larrieu, founder of META Belize and Vice President of the Mental Health Association (MHA), joined Ms. Tina Gill, Administrator of the Welcome Resource Center (WRC), for local media appearances.
They appeared on 7 News’ “Sun Up on 7” and Love FM’s “The Morning Show.” During these conversations, they discussed mental health advocacy, suicide awareness, and activities organized by the Mental Health Association.
Meanwhile, several high schools in Belize City participated in the WRC’s “Paint the Campus Green” campaign. Students wore green, a color widely associated with mental health awareness. Proceeds from the campaign supported the Welcome Resource Center.
Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy
World Mental Health Day provides an opportunity to encourage open conversations about mental health. In addition, it can help communities share information about available resources and support.
The World Federation for Mental Health established World Mental Health Day as a global initiative. Today, organizations and communities around the world use the observance to promote greater understanding of mental health.
META Belize also provides information through its mental health resources. You can also explore our mental health services for additional information.
Youth Mental Health Symposium
As part of the wider mental health awareness activities, the MHA partnered with UNICEF Belize and the Department of Youth Services for a Youth Symposium in Belize City. The event brought together 120 young Belizeans from seven secondary-level schools.
The symposium created space for conversations about mental health and suicide awareness. Importantly, it also gave young people an opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about wellness.
