Child abuse in Belize was the focus of an expert panel discussion featuring professionals working in mental health, human services, family support, and law enforcement. The discussion explored identifying possible signs of abuse, reporting concerns, available support for children and families, and understanding the cycle of abuse.
Expert Discussion on Child Abuse in Belize
Mrs. Azalia Larrieu, LCSW, joined the panel to share her professional insights on this important topic. The conversation considered how adults and communities can become more aware of concerns involving children and how families may seek appropriate support.
Other panel members included Mr. Shawn Vargas, Director of the Department of Human Services; Ms. Shakira Sutherland, Executive Director of the National Commission for Families and Children; and Ms. Mariette Robateau, Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Domestic Violence Unit.
Recognizing Concerns and Seeking Help
Children may respond to difficult or traumatic experiences in different ways. Therefore, concerns should be approached carefully and taken seriously. The panel discussed identifying possible abuse, understanding how concerns can be reported, and considering the support that may be available to children and their families.

Understanding the Cycle of Abuse
The conversation also addressed the cycle of abuse. Understanding patterns associated with abuse can support greater awareness and encourage people to take concerns seriously. Professional services can also play an important role when children or families need additional support.
